Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year - 1995
Dr. Anne Tanenbaum
Mrs. Anne Tanenbaum, nominated by the University of Toronto, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, Baycrest Centre Foundation, and the Art Gallery of Ontario, is the second recipient of the Outstanding Philanthropist Award.
The Tanenbaum name is proudly associated with many major institutions in Toronto and Israel. Anne Tanenbaum, her late husband, Max, and her children have been pace-setting supporters of a number of key philanthropic organizations. Specific projects and key donations from the Tanenbaum family include the Anne and Max Tanenbaum Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience at Mount Sinai Hospital, a chair and scholarship endowment fund at Ben Gurion University in Israel, and the Anne Tanenbaum Scholarship in English Literature at the University of Toronto, to name a few. By focusing primarily on funding programs rather than bricks and mortar, the Tanenbaum family's philanthropy has yielded measurable results, and has increased community interest in supporting research chairs and scholarships.
In recognition of her support, Mrs. Tanenbaum was awarded a honourary doctorate from Ben Gurion University in Israel in 1993. Her strong belief in tzedakah, the Jewish principle of one's ethical obligation to help others, has driven her and her children to set an international example of generosity and philanthropy.
