Bill Hallett has the four "c’s" essential to the business of philanthropy – compassion, commitment, clarity of thought and common sense. He brings these to his role as a fundraising executive and his role as leader within our professional organization, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
Bill’s fundraising career began with his 17 years of work at the YMCA in Peterborough and in Toronto. During his time at the YMCA of Greater Toronto, he was responsible for the philanthropy program and involved in the development of new facilities in his capacity as Vice President of Financial and Facility Development. He was a fundraising consultant for three years before joining The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation (HSCF) as Vice President and Chief Development Officer in July, 2000.
In just under three years at HSCF, Bill has become a tireless advocate of Sick Kids and has developed a solid understanding of the importance that philanthropy makes to the strategic mission of the institution. He quickly earned the respect of both the Board and staff at the Hospital and the Foundation and is known for his disciplined, respectful and diligent manner of working. He motivates and encourages his direct reports and mentors younger professionals.
Last year, he led a pilot project at the HSCF on the "constituency" model of fundraising. This involves developing constituency relations among patients, clinicians, volunteers, donors and scientists based on clinical program specialties.
Bill Hallett’s leadership in his professional association has inspired countless fundraising professionals. He became involved with the National Society of Fundraising Professionals (NSFRE) in 1987 and was the first President of the newly formed Toronto Chapter in 1994. Under his tenure as President, an office was created and paid staff hired; the Annual Congress was started; and Fundraising Day was launched. Bill was the first Canadian to serve on the Executive Committee of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the newly named NSFRE. He was Vice Chair of Membership of AFP internationally and currently sits on the International Research Council of AFP.
He is the one of three people in Canada who hold the designation of Advanced Certified Fund Raising Executive (ACFRE). In March of this year, Bill Hallett co-chaired the highly successful 40th Annual International Fundraising Conference in Toronto.
Bill Hallet has served our rapidly growing and complex profession in a leadership capacity for over 15 years. He brings the same courtesy and discipline for which his working peers commend him to his countless hours and roles as a volunteer. Our profession is richer because of him.
